Vietnam WAr
1150 First Street (Veterans Memorial Hall)

The mid-20th century saw a divided Vietnam torn apart in an aggressive war with the US backing South Vietnam against the North Vietnamese Army. The conflict also divided America. For the first time, television revealed the horrors of war on the evening news, igniting nation-wide anti-war protests. This scene emphasizes the military’s rising reliance on B-52 Bombers and HU-1 helicopters. It shows the silhouette of soldiers patrolling the delta in a boat and documents the injury of noncombatants. This mural depicts how Americans demonstrated to both end the war and honor our soldiers. After more than a hundred years of service, the Benicia Arsenal closed on March 30, 1964. The Arsenal was deemed too small and too close to a city for modern missile storage.
